Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world at 12,507 feet above sea level. The sun beams down through the thin air at this altitude and the lake appears to be a majestic deep blue. The Titicaca area is steeped in tradition and folklore and is the center of Inca creation legends.
The city of Puno lies on the Peruvian shore of Lake Titicaca and is the starting point for our excursions:
Puno and the surrounding countryside are the cradle of the Aymara civilization and the legendary birthplace of the founders of the Inca empire. It is believed that Manco Capac, the cultural founder of the Incas, emerged from the waters of Lake Titicaca. Many ethnic groups like the Uros still depend on the resources of the lake for their living. The Uros themselves dwell on floating islands they build with the lake’s reed vegetation.
